The 10 secluded bays in Mallorca

If you want to go swimming in Mallorca, you usually have to share the beach with countless other holidaymakers. Not so at these secluded coves that island locals have chosen.

This island is a phenomenon: Mallorca is so popular with Germans that it is often jokingly referred to as the 17th federal state. In many places, especially in the high season, you literally stand on your feet. But they still exist, the places that hardly any vacationers know. The finca agency company “Fincallorca” based on the island asked locals for the 10 most lonely bays on Mallorca – here you can relax in peace and quiet even in summer.

One thing in advance: All of these beaches are (still) insider tips, but of course you will usually meet other people there – just significantly fewer than at the hotspots of the island.

Cala Monjo

A small pebble beach near Peguera, framed by steep cliffs, shaded by a pine forest. The fantastic view of the sea can be enjoyed both on the beach and on the surrounding cliffs.

Cala Egos

The U-shaped bay of Cala Egos is located in the west of the island near Andratx – holidaymakers will find both a pebble beach and a sandy beach in front of the crystal blue sea. Since there is no shade here, it is advisable to take enough drinks and sun protection with you.

Cala en Basset

A walk through a forest near the village of Sant Elm leads those curious to this hidden pebble beach. Not only bathers, but also snorkelers get their money’s worth here – or you can simply enjoy the wonderful view of the cliffs and the historic watchtower that towers over the cala.

Cala Gata

Instead of powdered sugar sand, you will find a beach of rocks and pebbles near the village of Port des Canonge – but there are hardly any other holidaymakers. If you want, you can explore the nearby town after a relaxing day at the pool.

Calo des Moro

A soft sandy beach on the coast of the municipality of Santanyí in the southeast of the island, framed by green cliffs. You get there via a small path and bathe in the turquoise sea.

Platja S’Illot

Dream beach for the adventurous: near the bay on the Victoria peninsula there is a small offshore islet to which you can swim safely. Brave jump there from the three meter high cliffs into the blue. On the beach you can relax in the shade of the trees or in the on-site restaurant.

Platja Coll Baix

You have to earn this beach near Alcúdia with a 45-minute hike that leads there – but with the panoramic backdrop of cliffs and sea, it will surely fly by. Especially since you can then swim and cool off on a beautiful, wide beach.

Cala en Tugores

You also have to hike to this beach, starting from Cap de ses Salines, which is about four kilometers away. The path leads picturesquely through a wooded dune landscape. Also nearby is the Estany de ses Gambes lake, where animal lovers can spot countless seabirds.

Cala Marmols

This bay, framed by 20 meter high cliffs, can be reached on foot – but if you don’t want to walk the five kilometers, you can also take a boat to the white beach and enjoy the solitude.

Cala s’Almunia

The ideal beach for a romantic sunset: it is framed by a bay that is “decorated” with small fishermen’s houses. Not only bathers get their money’s worth here, but also snorkelers.

More insider tips away from the crowds

A general tip to avoid crowds of holidaymakers in summer: try to adopt the Spanish daily rhythm and their eating times. Don’t go to the beach until late afternoon like the Mallorcans do. Then not only are the temperatures much more pleasant, but also most package holidaymakers who storm to the hotel buffet from 6 p.m.

In the hot summer, the best time to hike is in the morning or late afternoon. The stone path leads steeply up to the castle ruins of Alaró. During the hour and a half hike between pine trees and olive groves you see more goats than tourists – especially in August.

If you don’t feel like hiking, there are many alternatives in the quiet interior of the island. In the Orange Valley of Sóller you can visit citrus farms or discover old olive mills. A village worth seeing is Montuiri. Next to the colossal church, only locals sit on the terrace of the village pub. tourists? None! The nearby prehistoric settlement of Son Fornés ought to attract crowds.

Where the Mallorcans shop

Another example are the weekly markets: the majority of tourists go to Sineu for the Wednesday market. There are two really large, very authentic markets in Alaró on Saturday and in Santa Maria del Camí on Sunday, where almost only Mallorquins shop.
