China wants to have exposed suspected MI6 spy

China says it has exposed a foreign spy. The man is said to have worked for the British foreign secret service MI6. He was arrested by China's Ministry of State Security.

According to a statement, the Chinese Ministry of State Security has arrested a person working for the British

The foreign secret service MI6 is said to have worked. A foreign citizen with the surname Huang is said to have entered China several times to collect information.

The man was also trained by the British secret service for espionage, the statement said. He ran a consulting firm abroad and was recruited by the MI6 secret service in 2015. It is unclear which country the suspected spy comes from. But he is not a Chinese citizen. No further details were given.

Mutual allegations of espionage

China and Great Britain have long accused each other of espionage activities. Other countries also assume that China is spying abroad on a large scale. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, for example, warns of Chinese espionage attempts in Germany.

In China itself, the authorities have taken increasingly tough action against alleged threats to national security in recent years. Suspected spies were repeatedly exposed. The authorities took action against foreign consulting firms in a large-scale operation last year. Citizens are warned about foreign spies in campaigns.

Tough approach by China

The communist government also enacted a stricter and broadly interpretable anti-espionage law in August. This gives the authorities additional options to take action against companies or individuals who work with China-specific information or data. It is no longer just actions that are specifically directed against the national security of the People’s Republic that are punishable, but also potentially anything that is directed against China’s “national interests.”
