Second day of Greek Riots in Athens.

Gallery-Riots-in-Athens-R-001Protesters in Greece carried on yesterdays violence to the second day by throwing rocks and firebombs at riot police and smashing store windows in which the police responded with teargas. The riots started during the anniversary gathering of a 15 year old that was shot dead by Greek police last year.

The killing of 15 year old lexis Grigoropoulos was the cause of 2 weeks of rioting last year in Greece which led gangs made up of youths smashing, looting and burning down shops all over the country.

The clashes that occurred today were due to a crowed of 3000 youths mostly secondary school students. The students in the back of the crowed threw stones, firebombs and firecrackers, smashing some of the bus stops and shop fronts which started the clashes with the police.

The protesters also beat a man unconscious after he tried to intervene to stop the violence. Demonstrators spray painted anti-police graffiti and put up a photograph of Grigoropoulos on shop windows and walls along the demonstration route.

At Athens University, masked protesters broke into the building, injuring the university’s dean and pulling down a Greek flag, replacing it with a black and red anarchist banner. The clashes continued late into the night, and police clashed with protesters in the southern city of Patras and the north-western city of Loannina.
