Till Lindemann: Rock star with two faces

On and off the stage, Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann polarizes like no other. But how does the shock rocker tick privately?

When Rammstein is on tour, there is always something to talk about: a stage as big as a small-town fair, pillars of fire and an artistic platter from the “hard and harder” manufactory that polarizes. But that’s not why the band is making headlines these days.

Frontman Till Lindemann is currently in the public eye. It’s about cast women for his after-show parties, knockout drops, abuse of power and other allegations. Here you can read more about it. But who is this Till Lindemann actually?

Born in Leipzig, he grew up in the West Pomeranian nowhere – as the son of the journalist Brigitte Lindemann and the children’s book author Werner Lindemann. As an adolescent he passed the time with sporting activities. He was particularly fond of swimming. In 1980, Till Lindemann was even part of the Olympic squad. However, the big dream of a successful pool career was shattered when he illegally sneaked out of the team hotel during the European Championships in Rome.

Daughter Nele also makes music

In addition to sports, Till Lindemann is enthusiastic about poetry and music. His first band is called First Ass. Four years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he founded Rammstein. The rest is music history.

By then, Lindemann had long been a father. In 1985 he had a daughter, Nele, with his first wife, Marieke. The marriage breaks up shortly after the birth. Nele grew up with her father for the first seven years. The meanwhile studied theater and literature studies founded a band called Lindemann DubZ and made Till Lindemann the grandfather of grandson Fritz in 2008.

Till Lindemann later marries again: he has another daughter with the teacher Anja Köseling. Marie-Louise was born in 1993. Four years later this marriage also falls apart.

Nevertheless, the singer raves about family life in one of his rare interviews: “When children have their own life, then you just look afterwards. Suddenly there is a small family sitting at the table, my daughter with her husband and a child. There is absolute carelessness because they do their thing. You’re just a spectator and sometimes pick up the grandson. And you can give him away if he’s annoying. It’s perfect,” says the 60-year-old in 2020 to “Playboy”.

So far nothing has been heard from his family about the allegations against Till Lindemann. One who is currently publicly supporting him is moderator Sophia Thomalla. He is with her from 2011 to 2015, she continues to wear his face as a tattoo on her arm. Even after the separation, the two should have a good relationship with each other. As part of the allegations against Lindemann, Thomalla recently backed him.

Father, grandfather, polarizing rock star in the spotlight. But when the private Till Lindemann gets too noisy in the city, he moves out into the country. There he fishes, hunts and relaxes: “I then stare at the lake. I sleep in the woods at night and listen. I listen to nature. I hate noise. I hate gossip. Noise drives people crazy. You die in it,” says Lindemann the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” in 2012.
