“Biggest human rights tragedy” / protests against Caribbean travel continue – William wants to react

Good face to the bad game? While Prince William and Duchess Kate are doing everything they can to shine on their trip abroad, dissenting voices are increasing. This is also becoming clear again in Jamaica.

Protests overshadow William and Kate’s visit to Jamaica. It’s the next stop on their week-long Caribbean tour: After three days in Belize, the royal couple arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday. As they are greeted at the airport by official dignitaries and step onto the tarmac in outfits in the Jamaican national colors, later reports of protests follow again.

But first things first: Duchess Kate causes a stir with her bright yellow dress from the Roksanda brand, William chooses a black suit with a green tie. In combination, the symbolism is right: the national flag of Jamaica shines in yellow, black and green.

After being received at the airport, Prince William and Duchess Kate move to Trench Town in the capital Kingston. In the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley, they visit, among other things, a cultural center and Queen’s eldest grandson kicks with some young soccer players on the soccer field. On the Instagram account, the couple shared several impressions of these scenes and wrote: “What an incredible day in Trench Town – the birthplace of reggae music in the heart of Kingston.” You can also follow the Royals’ journey in pictures in our photo show.

But the Caribbean visit is also accompanied by protests in Jamaica: just a few kilometers from the capital Kingston, demonstrators meet on Tuesday to demand reparations for slavery and an apology. In a letter, the activists are also urging Queen Elizabeth II to be deposed as head of state in the Caribbean state, as recently happened in Barbados. Similar protests have also taken place in Belize.

“We see no reason to celebrate your grandmother’s 70th anniversary on the British throne, because under her leadership and that of her predecessors the greatest human rights tragedy in human history continued,” quoted the British newspaper “Independent” from the letter. According to the US magazine “People”, William and Kate should be “aware” of the protests. William is expected to comment on the matter in a speech on Wednesday night.
