Cleric and politician Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has given Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif 48 hours to resign.

Islamabad, Aug 26/Nationalturk – With cleric Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri giving Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif 48 hours to resign, the prime minister on Tuesday met army chief General Raheel Sharif.

While addressing tens of thousands of party activists on 11th day of the protest sit-in outside Constitution Avenue in capital Islamabad, cleric and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief, Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri said disclosures by a former official of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that elections in 2013 were rigged has made it clear and there was no more need to hold an investigation into the rigging allegations.

“It has become clear that polls were rigged and elections were unconstitutional,” he said.

Qadri gave 48-hour deadline to Pakistan PM and government to quit and step down.

Quoting retired ECP official Muhammad Afzal Khan, he said there were much more than 35 punctures during the 2013 elections. “The whole election exercise was fraud as the ex-senior official of ECP had revealed the secrets,” he said and told his supporters that historical sit-in was now entering the last revolutionary phase and time had come for ultimate victory.

He said government has held negotiations to waste time.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) of cleric and politician Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by cricketer turned politician Imran Khan have been staging “revolution” and “freedom” marches respectively since August 14 outside country’s Red Zone housing Parliament, PM House, President’s House, Supreme court and embassies of some countries.

Thousands of supporters of Khan and Qadri have been camping in the Red Zone and demanding ouster of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

PM Nawaz meets army chief

After the deadline, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met army chief Gen Raheel Sharif today afternoon to discuss the prevailing situation in the country.

Official sources said during the meeting, matters pertaining to ongoing political protests in the Pakistan were discussed.

They said both prime minister and the army chief agreed to immediately resolve the political issue.

This is not the first time during the ongoing political turmoil that the army chief and the prime minister have met to discuss a possible a solution to end the deadlock. In recent weeks, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif have also met with the army chief.

Most analysts in Pakistan believe that the military does not want a coup, but it could exploit the protests to pressure the civilian government and dictate terms to it.
