Lt General Dalbir Singh has been appointed as new Indian army chief and will take charge on July 31.

New Delhi, May 15/Nationalturk – Setting all speculations at rest, Indian government has appointed Lt General Dalbir Singh as new Indian army chief and he will take charge on July 31.

“Indian government have decided to appoint Lt General Dalbir Singh, presently Vice army chief as the next Chief of Indian Army after retirement of the present army chief  General Bikram Singh,” an Indian official spokesman said.

The present Indian army chief General Bikram Singh will be retiring on July 31, 2014.

Lt General Dalbir Singh was commissioned in Indian Army on June 16, 1974. During a career spanning nearly 40 years, he has held various Command and Staff appointments. He has done National Defence College, Long Defence Management Courseand Senior Command Courses.

Lt General Dalbir Singh is serving as Vice Chief of Indian Army since January 1, 2014. Earlier he commanded Eastern Army Command.

Dalbir Singh will be 26th Indian army chief

Dalbir Singh will be the 26th chief of Indian army and will serve for 29-month as the chief of the world’s second-largest standing Army till December 31, 2016.

The opposition BJP had complained to the Election Commission of India (ECI) last month that the government should be directed not to name new army chief as new government will be forced soon.

The 9-phase elections for Indian parliament concluded recently and counting of votes will be held tomorrow. It is widely expected that rightwing Hindu party BJP will form the next government in India alongwith its allies.
