With Indian government deciding  to carve Telangana as 29th state of the country from one of the three regions of southern State of  Andhra Pradesh, the demand for creation of more States has increased.

New Delhi, July 31/Nationalturk- The Indian government led by Congress party has decided to carve Telangana as 29th state of the country from one of the three regions of southern State of  Andhra Pradesh.

The decision to create a Telangana state, a process that’s likely to take at least five-six months, was cleared last evening by parties in the ruling coalition in Indian government and then by the Congress’s powerful Working Committee (CWC). CWC is the highest decision making body of the Congress

The Telangana region comprises 10 districts: Hyderabad, Adilabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, and Warangal.

Sources said the decision for a separate Telangana state was taken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday. Before and after that, the party had prepped carefully to blunt extreme protests and resignations of its members who belong to the regions of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra, collectively referred to as Seemandhra.

‘New State will come into being in 4-5 months’

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh told reporters the new state will come into being in four to five months.

“The issue would go to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, whose resolution will be sent to the Union Cabinet, which will appoint a Group of Ministers to look into issues relating to sharing of water, electricity and safety and security of all three regions of the state,” he said.

Singh said until a new capital is formed for Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad will be capital of both states.

Another Congress leader Ajay Maken said party president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh both strongly pitched for creation of Telangana state during CWC meeting.

The Celebrations broke out in Telangana after the Congress leaders announced the decision. People in Telangana burst crackers and distributed sweets.

However, groups seeking a united Andhra Pradesh expressed unhappiness with the decision and a shutdown has been called in the Seemandhra region (as coastal Andhra and Rayalseema are commonly known) Wednesday.  Road transport has come to a standstill while shops, business establishments and educational institutions have remained closed in the two regions.

Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, of the Congress, and three legislators – two from the Congress and one from the Telugu Desam Party – resigned in protest.

Political observers said a bill that creates the new state will have to be passed by Parliament. “The bill to create Telangana is expected to reach Parliament in the next four to five months, probably in the winter session.  Once approved by Parliament, the bill will again be sent to the President for his assent.”

They said the move is also political one as it is going to give more seats to Congress party in the newly created State.

Demand for creation of more States increases

Some politicians and people have demanded that more States should be created. Senior Indian politician Mayawati has demanded that India’s largest populous State Uttar Pradesh should be split into four States. She said she had proposed splitting Uttar Pradesh into Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Pashchimanchal.

Similarly, some leaders are demanding that Vidarbha region should be split from Maharashtra and given a separate state status. The demands for formation of new states have also come from politicians and people of North East and West India. There are demands to carve out separate Gorkhaland from state of West Bengal.
