A senior Indian minister has questioned the halting of traffic for Prime Minister, President and military chiefs.

New Delhi, Jan 9/Nationalturk – A senior minister in Indian government has criticised the VIP security system in the country and questioning halting of traffic for Prime Minister, President and military chiefs.

“Traffic should not be halted for anybody. I feel even the traffic hold up for Prime Minister, and President is far too long. The number of cars that accompany PM and President can easily be reduced by half,” Indian Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh was quoted as saying by Indian wire news agency, PTI.

He termed the VIP security as a state within a state “No questions are asked. And there is no accountability”.

According to Jairam, his car was halted near the Army Chief’s residence yesterday afternoon by army’s Military Police when he was going to attend a meeting.

Perturbed over the situation, he said, “India’s Defence Minister A K Antony does not do this. There is no security to Antony at all. Instead of military police regulating the traffic, the traffic cops should regulate it. I will write about this to defence minister”.

“Today I was stopped for passage of Army chief’s convoy.  Once I was held up because of the Naval chief. Once I was held up because of Air Force chief. Once I was held up because of the Chief Justice of India,” Ramesh said.

Supreme Court had slammed misuse of red beacon lights

India’s Supreme Court had in December last year slammed misuse of red beacon lights on cars, saying the practice had perhaps no parallel in the world democracies.

“The red lights with or without flasher can be used only while the specified high dignitary is on duty and not otherwise,” the court had said and directed imposing deterrent penalty on the violators of the rules containing prohibition against the use of red lights and multi-toned horns or similar devices.

After the Apex court ruling, many top politicians and ministers in India did away with red beacon lights on their cars.
