Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari Monday said Pakistan was determined to root out militancy from the country.

Islamabad, June 10/Nationalturk- Sending a strong message to militant groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari Monday said Pakistan government was determined to root out militancy from the country.

“Pakistan was determined to root out militancy as it threatened all countries in the region and indeed the whole world,” Zardari said in his address to joint sitting of parliament.

It was his historic sixth address to the joint session of Parliament. He became the first civilian president to address the joint sitting of parliament for 6th year.

While congratulating the newly elected members of parliament, Zardari praised people of Pakistan for demonstrating courage and participating in the elections despite terror threats.

“People have spoken through their vote. Their voice has been heard and demonstrated by the smooth transition of power,” he said.

Militancy, extremism poses threat to country

Zardari said the issue of militancy, extremism and terrorism poses the largest threat to national security. “The country stands united to tackle this. We are willing to make peace with those, who renounce violence but are also ready to take action against those who challenge the writ of the state”.

Calling for sincere and collective efforts, he said the country can fight militancy better, through dialogue and cooperation rather than doubting each other.

“Our armed forces, para military forces, police and the citizens have made great sacrifices in fighting militancy,” he said adding nation was proud of their sacrifices and categorically stated their sacrifices would not go waste.

Referring to US drone strikes, Pakistan president said nobody would be allowed to violate Pakistan’s sovereignty and it should be protected at all costs.

Terming drone attacks serious violation of sovereignty and international law, he said “They are also counterproductive and are not acceptable”.
