Saif Al-Adel is said to be the new Al Qaeda leader

After the death of Al Qaeda boss Al-Sawahiri last summer, according to the United States and the UN, there is a new leader: it should therefore be the long-time Egyptian extremist Saif al-Adel.

Since the death of Al Qaeda boss Aiman Al-Sawahiri last summer, the terrorist organization has been officially without a leader: According to the United States, the long-time Egyptian extremist Saif al-NelZ has been regarded as the new head of the Al Qaeda terror network. This was confirmed by the spokesman for the US State Department, NED Price, on the relevant questions from journalists. The US government’s assessment matched a UN report that was distributed to the UN Security Council on Monday, said Price.

Bounty exposed to al Adel

In this report, the former military was identified as the new head of the terror network. Accordingly, it is assumed that Al-Nadel is currently in Iran. The United States is looking for the man in connection with the bomb attacks on the US messages in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998. They have exposed a bounty of $ 10 million (around 9.3 million euros) on it, as from a profile from the Federal Police FBI emerges. It is described in it as a high-ranking Al Qaeda leader and head of the Hittin Committee, which defines and coordinates the transnational activities of the group. The al-Adel, which was around 60 years old today, was formerly lieutenant colonel of the Egyptian special forces.

According to this, the UN report states that the prevailing view of the UN Member States is that Al-Nadel is now leading Al Qaeda. For two reasons, however, he was not officially called for the “Emir” of the Islamist terrorist network: On the one hand, the matter was delicate because the radical Islamic Taliban, which prevailed in Afghanistan USA was killed in a house in Kabul. On the other hand, Saif Al Adel lives in Iran and thus in a mostly Shiite country, whereas Al Qaeda is a Sunni group.

The UN report also said that Al-Nadel’s stay at Iran said questions about the “ambitions of al-kaida in the assertion of his leadership of a worldwide movement in view of the challenges by IS”, that is, the rival jihadist militia Islamic State.

Ex-fbi investigator: “His temperament is notorious”

Former FBI investigator Ali Soufan, who was involved in the search for Al Qaeda activists, according to the Reuters news agency, as a clever personality and poker face. “His temperament is notorious. With his sharp tongue, he threatens everyone who dislikes him. In the case of subordinates, he could become contemptuous and even brutal. On the other hand, he is also known for friendly advice. The specialist at the Institute for National Security Studies at the University of Tel Aviv, Yoram Schweitzer, judged: “He is a very brave, professional and cold -blooded personality.”

Al-Adel is said to have an important role

Experts assume that Al-NelZ has been part of the innermost Al Qaeda district for decades. They suspect that he has to take on the task of strategically leading the Al Qaeda cells in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. But there are also doubts as to whether he has grown to these tasks. “Many insiders believe that he has played an important operational role in the past, but that it is not suitable for a leadership role,” said Jerome Drevon’s International Crisis Group. “His skills are more suitable for planning armed operations than for the management of a large network.”

Al Qaeda officially without a leader since August

Al Qaeda has been officially without a leader since Al-Sawahiri was killed in a targeted US air attack in Afghanistan last August. Al-Sawahiri took over in 2011, after the long-time leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by US special units in his hiding place in Pakistan. The terrorist network had declared itself responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the USA. Al-Adel, alleged stay in Iran, is just another example of the far-reaching support of terrorism as well as the destabilizing activities of Tehran in the region and beyond, Price said.
