The 12 most spectacular underwater hotels worldwide

“Rooms with a sea view” with a difference: simply dive down and stay in one of the few underwater hotels in the world!

Being able to stay in an underwater hotel is no longer a sci-fi dream, it’s already a reality. Admittedly, there is currently no hotel that is completely under water, but some hotels already offer rooms under water. Here we have 12 underwater facilities that offer an exceptional view of the underwater world! Four of them are still in planning!

Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The underwater suites at Atlantis The Palm in Dubai are called Neptune and Poseidon, named after the gods of the sea. The two would probably have felt quite comfortable in the 5-star hotel on the Palm Jumeirah.

Just imagine lying snuggly in bed with your partner and having the sea life of the Ambassador Lagoon right in front of you. Both the bedroom and the bathroom have huge windows that offer a view of the underwater world. A dream in blue!

The Manta Resort, Zanzibar, Tanzania

The Underwater Room at The Manta Resort on Pemba in Zanzibar is the most exclusive hotel room in the entire resort. To reach it, you even have to take a short boat trip in a wooden boat that takes you on the turquoise waters in about two minutes to the unique accommodation, which is located directly above the crystal-clear sea of the manta house reef. If you don’t want to stay underwater all the time, you can sunbathe and relax on the surface. An absolutely unique holiday experience!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Rangali Island, Maldives

The Conrad Maldives Rangali doesn’t have a fixed underwater hotel room, but you can dine in an idiosyncratic sea world atmosphere and you don’t need a diving suit for it. The Ithaa underwater restaurant is located about five meters below sea level and you can taste a delicious mix of traditional Maldivian and modern fare while the sea creatures go about their daily lives around you. The Ithaa has also been turned into an underwater hotel room before, so it might be worth asking. If you are planning a holiday in the Maldives, you should not miss this restaurant!

Subsix at Niyama, Huluwalu, Maldives

And if you still feel like a spectacular night of partying after dinner, you can go from the underwater restaurant to the world’s first underwater club, which is also located in the Maldives. The Subsix is located in the luxurious Niyama Resort, but is also accessible to visitors who are not staying at the hotel. Here you can dance and sip fine cocktails while immersed in the depths of the Indian Ocean. The club is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 9pm until late at night (or early in the morning).

Utter Inn Hotel, Vasteras, Sweden

Away from tropical-warm temperatures to cooler latitudes: The Utter Inn, Sweden’s only underwater hotel, floats lazily in Lake Mälaren near Stockholm. It’s not as luxurious as its worldwide relatives, but the experience is no less exciting: small rooms, located about three meters below the water surface and equipped with picture windows, offer a unique view. The Inn was created by artist Mikael Genberg and has become a trendy hotel. On the wooden terraces on the surface you can sunbathe and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you or explore the nearby islands by boat.

Jules’ Undersea Lodge, Key Largo, Florida, USA

Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida is believed to be named after the author of the classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne, and is the oldest underwater room in the world. Reaching it is not easy, however, as it is a little more than six meters below the surface of the water and you have to dive to get there. Access is through an opening in the floor, and what used to be a research lab is now a cozy dwelling.

Huvafen Fushi, North Male Atoll, Maldives

The Maldives appears to be at the forefront when it comes to underwater facilities: Lime Spa at Huvafen Fushi is the world’s first underwater spa. One can choose from relaxing and all-sensory treatments while gazing at the enchanting underwater world. If you can or want to afford it, try the Lime Light Ritual, a 180-minute treatment that focuses on ingredients indigenous to the Maldives, such as coconut, lime and special minerals. You can also relax in the Relaxation Pod and have the best view of the lagoon.

Lovers Deep, Caribbean

Do dive down. And really! A different kind of accommodation is offered by the Lovers Deep, a luxurious submarine that is said to dive off any Caribbean island you want. Santa Lucia comes highly recommended! The underwater boat allows insights into the colorful underwater world of the Caribbean and is specially designed for a romantic love vacation. Couples who want to be alone on vacation and also want something unusual will feel particularly comfortable in this accommodation. A love that goes under the ocean!

Poseidon Undersea Resorts, Fiji

Although still in the planning stage, the Poseidon Undersea Resort would be the first “true” underwater hotel, as it will be completely submerged. It will house 22 rooms (51 square meters each), an underwater restaurant, a bar, a library, conference facilities, a wedding chapel, a spa and a 110 square meter luxury suite. The opening of the Poseidon was actually planned a few years ago and you can put yourself on a waiting list, but when and if it will open is still unclear.

The Water Discus Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Water Discus Hotel, supported by a Swiss company and designed by Deep Ocean Technology Poland, is an impressive project. It will feature 21 luxury suites located on two circular platforms, one above and one below sea level. It will look not too dissimilar to a spaceship and will also feature a bar and diving centre. Here, too, the completion of the project is still somewhat uncertain.

Hydropolis Underwater Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort is or was also planned for Dubai and should be about 20 meters under water directly on the shore of Jumeirah Beach. It should occupy a total area of 260 hectares. However, due to financial difficulties, the project is on hold and was officially canceled in October 2004, but efforts are still being made to complete the underwater hotel.

Planet Ocean Underwater Hotel, Florida, United States

The future of the planned Planet Ocean Underwater Hotel, on the other hand, looks a little brighter and is to be built on private land near Key West. A big focus of this hotel is coral reef restoration and ocean conservation. This luxury resort will offer twelve rooms, a lounge, a restaurant area and a beautiful view of the sea world.
