Trouble with Google’s flight search engine

If you are looking for flights, you will find a practical search help on Google

. It even shows the climate-relevant emissions of the flight – but a change causes trouble.

The Google flight search only shows the climate-damaging effects for the flights displayed to a limited extent – and is criticized for this. After the change, according to Google, flights have a significantly smaller impact on the climate than before the change. “Google has taken a big chunk out of the airline industry’s climate-damaging impact,” said Doug Parr, chief scientist at Greenpeace.

Specifically, since July only the CO2 emissions are displayed. Before that, the further contribution to global warming was also included. According to a BBC report, the aviation industry is only responsible for around two percent of global CO2 emissions, but accounts for 3.5 percent of man-made global warming.

This is because airplane contrails trap heat radiated from the Earth. This aspect is no longer reflected in Google’s most recent calculations. According to “BBC”, Google said that the change was made after consultation with industry partners.
