UEFA imposes new bans and sanctions on Russia

UEFA announced that due to Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, Russian football teams were also banned from European cups next season and their applications to host the EURO 2028 and EURO 2032 European Championships were deemed invalid.

In a written statement from UEFA, in addition to the decision on February 28 to suspend all Russian representative teams and clubs from competing in UEFA organizations until further notice, today the UEFA Executive Board took some decisions regarding the effects of this decision on their upcoming competitions.

2022/23 UEFA club competitions

According to the decision taken by the UEFA Executive Board, Russian teams will not be able to compete in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA European Conference League and UEFA Women’s Champions League next season.

Applications to host EURO 2028 and 2032

The UEFA Executive Committee also announced that the offer submitted by the Russian Football Union (FUR) to host EURO 2028 or EURO 2032 is not eligible and applications for hosting are deemed invalid.

The Turkish Football Federation also applied to UEFA as an official candidacy for the 2028 European Championship finals to be held in Turkey.

UEFA Nations League 2022/2023

Russia will not participate in Group B Group 2 matches next season and will automatically be placed in fourth place in this group.

As a result, Russia will be relegated at the end of the group stage and they will be placed 16th and last in League B.

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022

Russia will also not be in Group C of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final tournament, scheduled for 6-31 July in England. Russia will be replaced by Portugal, which they defeated in the play-offs.

European Qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Russia could not play two matches in Group E (consisting of Denmark, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Malta and Azerbaijan) that were scheduled to play in April due to penalties.

Russia will not participate in any of the subsequent matches in this event and all results so far will be voided.

As a result, Group E will continue as a five-team group.

2021-23 U21 European Championship

Russia was unable to play both matches in Group C (consisting of Spain, Slovakia, Malta, Lithuania and Northern Ireland) due to penalties, which were scheduled to play in March.

Russia will not participate in any of the subsequent matches in this competition and all results so far will be void.

As a result, Group C will continue as a five-team group.

UEFA Women’s Futsal EURO 2022 (final tournament)

Russia will not participate in the final tournament (consisting of Portugal, Spain and Ukraine) scheduled to be held in Portugal between 1 and 3 July and will be replaced by Hungary, which finished second in Group 1 of the main round, where Russia won.

2022-23 UEFA Women’s Futsal EURO

Russia was drawn directly into Group 4 of the main round. Russia will be replaced in the main round by the second best runner-up of the qualifying round.

2022/23 UEFA Futsal Champions League

Russia will not have any affiliated clubs participating in the 2022-23 UEFA Futsal Champions League.

In the European Qualifiers main round group stage for the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup, Russia will be replaced by Norway, the third best placed team of the qualifying round.
