Vietnam on the verge of four million Covid-19 cases

Vietnam today reported a new maximum of Covid-19 cases and tomorrow it could reach four million if, as the health authorities predict, in the coming days the figures maintain their increasing trend.

This Thursday the infections amounted to 118 thousand 790, which raised the accumulated since the start of the pandemic to three million 885 thousand 631.

If that amount is repeated on Friday or that of yesterday, which also marked a peak, Vietnam will be confirmed as the second country in Southeast Asia with the most infected, only surpassed by Indonesia.

Until the end of April last year, the Indochinese nation was one of those that best dealt with the disease in the world (3,428 cases, 35 deaths), but first the emergence of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, and since two months ago the Ómicron, shot up the statistics to the current ones.

The epidemiological situation is also worrying in Hanoi, which has been reporting almost daily highs since the beginning of the year. This Wednesday the figure, again unprecedented, was 18,861, more than a sixth of the national total.

The Ministry of Health also reported 95 deaths to date, bringing the total to 40,547. Some 3,800 patients have a compromised clinical picture.

Vietnam is focused on achieving herd immunity through vaccination. To date, almost 79 of its 98 million inhabitants have completed the two-dose immunization regimen and almost 41 percent have completed a third booster.
