Accident off Mallorca: passenger falls from cruise ship – search stopped

A woman fell off a cruise ship in the middle of the night. A rescue operation with boats and helicopters was unsuccessful. The search for the missing person has now been abandoned.

On the night of Sunday, a passenger from a cruise ship fell into the sea around 120 kilometers south-east of Mallorca. This was reported by “Mallorca Magazin”. The woman has since disappeared. The search for the missing person has now been stopped. Ships in the area would continue to be warned, but the rescue operation with helicopters would not go any further.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on the Azamara Quest cruise ship. According to reports, the captain informed the operations management of the sea rescue service in Palma de Mallorca that a middle-aged woman had fallen into the sea. Passengers on board had therefore observed the scene and alerted the staff.

Search is unsuccessful

The initiated search operation with boats and helicopters was unsuccessful. “Our helicopters have been looking for her all night, as part of an operation that also involves the cruise ship and one of our rescue ships,” a spokesman for the Coast Guard said on Spanish television.

“The past few hours, the water temperature and the fact that the missing woman fell into the sea without swimming aids are reducing any hopes of finding her alive.”

Nothing is known about the identity of the woman. The reasons for her fall into the sea are still unclear. The “Azamara Quest” set out from Barcelona on an eight-day journey. The itinerary included Malaga and Casablanca.
