Apple introduces iOS 16 with a revamped lock screen and big changes to iMessage

Apple kicked off its annual developer conference by unveiling its next-generation mobile software, iOS 16, with new features that will allow users to customize their lock screens and change the way they text friends through iMessage.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which kicked off on Monday, Apple said it will add more features to iMessage, including the ability to edit or unsend messages. The company said that these two options are among the most requested features by users.

Apple also showed off new options for iPhone users to add widgets to the lock screen for at-a-glance information like upcoming calendar events and weather. It also showed off more personalized wallpapers for the lock screen and the ability to toggle options throughout the day.

Additionally, iOS users will be able to follow “real-time” activities, such as the progress of an Uber ride or updates from a sports game, in an attempt to have a more seamless notification experience. iOS users in the US will also be able to spread payments over 8 weeks in Apple Pay, similar to a “buy now, pay later” service.

The new features will probably be available later this year.

Some industry watchers are also hopeful that Apple might offer a first look at a platform that could be called RealityOS. The platform could power mixed reality headsets, a device said to be capable of both virtual reality and augmented reality, which Apple has been rumored to be working on for years.

Apple’s event will be broadcast live on its website and on the company’s YouTube channel.
