All shops, business establishments, government offices, banks and educational institutions remained closed while vehicular traffic was off the roads. Only police, paramilitary, army and some private vehicles were plying on the otherwise busy roads.

The authorities had enforced tight security restrictions in some parts of Kashmir to prevent people from taking to roads and staging anti-India demonstrations. The police and paramilitary soldiers had placed barricades and concertina wires on the roads and were not allowing more than four persons to assemble at a single place.

However, defying restrictions youth took to roads at Batamaloo, Masiuma, Soura and other parts of Kashmir and staged anti-India demonstrations. Chanting pro-freedom, pro-Islamic and anti-India slogans, they were demanding the release of the Kashmiris who were awarded death penalty and lifer by an Indian court.

The protesting youth also clashed with police and paramilitary soldiers, who fired tear smoke shells, rubber bullets and resorted to heavy baton charge. The pitched battles during which youth hurled stones and bricks towards the cops continued for some time.
