A court in Pakistan has ordered registration of case against Pakistan’s former military ruler Parvez Musharraf, who is presently in detention, for his alleged involvement in the Lal Masjid operation in 2007.

Islamabad, July 12/Nationalturk – In what could be termed as further legal trouble to embattled detained Pakistan’s former military ruler General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf, a court in Pakistan has ordered registration of case against him for his alleged involvement in the Lal Masjid operation in 2007.

The Islamabad High Court ordered registration of a case against Musharraf on basis of a petition filed in court regarding the Lal Masjid Operation launched by army in 2007 to evict ‘terrorists’ from the mosque.

The court admitted a plea filed by Haroon Rasheed son of Ghazi Abdul Rashid against the murder of his father and grandmother during the Lal Masjid operation.

Military operation was launched against militants hiding in mosque

On July 3, 2007, Musharraf, who was then president of Pakistan, had ordered a military operation against the militants hiding in the mosque for challenging the writ of the state.

The military besieged the mosque for 12 days before assaulting the compound. In the operation launched by Pakistani elite forces many students, who had been defying government, were killed. The deputy cleric of the mosque Ghazi Abdul Rashid was also killed in the military assault. 58 Pakistani soldiers were also killed in the firefight with the seminary students.

Pakistan media had initially backed Musharraf’s operation against militants in Lal Masjid. However, after some time the media raised queries over the necessity of the operation.

Musharraf had come to power in 1999 by deposing Nawaz Sharif’s last government in a military coup.

Musharraf arrested after returning to Pakistan in March

The 69-year-old former military ruler was arrested shortly after he returned to Pakistan in March this year to lead his party in the polls. He is currently being held at his Islamabad farmhouse and is facing charges in three high-profile cases related to 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, killing of Baloch  leader Akbar Bugti in a 2006 military operation and arrest of judges after imposition of emergency in 2007.

The newly elected Pakistan government has decided to initiate high treason case against him for abrogating the constitution and imposing emergency rule in November 2007.
