The Catalan parliament has passed a historic motion in favor of initiating the process of independence from Spain.

The nine-point plan passed with 72 votes out of 135 in the parliament Monday in favor of a “pacific disconnection” from Spain.

The motion gives the Catalan parliament 30 days to work on a new legislation, with the end result intended to be a fully independent republic.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is expected to give his response later in the day.
