Soccer world champion Andreas Brehme has died at the age of 63. Brehme scored the winning goal with a penalty in the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina to make it 1-0.

The soccer player, coach and 1990 world champion Andreas Brehme is dead. He died at the age of 63, as his partner Susanne Schaefer confirmed to the dpa news agency on behalf of his family.

Brehme was born in Hamburg in 1960 and was supported by his father from an early age. As a 19-year-old, he came to the then second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken and moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern after just one season. This was followed by a global career with stints at FC Bayern and Inter Milan, among others. In 1990 he made Germany world champions with his final penalty against Argentina.

Brehme was also active as a coach – for example at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, SpVgg Unterhaching and as an assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart.

The long-time national soccer player and world champion Andreas Brehme died completely unexpectedly at the age of 63.

His partner Susanne Schaefer confirmed this to the German Press Agency on Tuesday on behalf of his family. “It is with deep sadness that I announce on behalf of the family that my partner Andreas Brehme died suddenly and unexpectedly tonight as a result of a cardiac arrest. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time and refrain from asking questions,” said Schaefer’s message .

According to the “Bild” report, Brehme was taken to the emergency room in a hospital near his apartment, but any help came too late.

The full-back is a legend of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, played more than 300 games for the Palatinate and also celebrated the sensational championship as a promoted team in the 1997/98 season. He also won the DFB Cup wearing the “Red Devils” jersey. He also played in Italy for Inter Milan for several years, winning a championship title there and even the UEFA Cup. The 1990 world champion was most recently present at Franz Beckenbauer’s funeral service.

Before the appointment, he spoke in an interview with t-online about his memories of the “Kaiser” and paid tribute to him in detail: “It is always a great shame and sadness when a friend dies.
