Berlin car bomb: Man dies in blast in German capital

A man has died when the car he was driving exploded in central Berlin on Tuesday morning.

Berlin police spokesman Michael Merkle told N24 television that an explosive device caused the blast, but said the background to the incident was not clear.

Police could not immediately identify the driver, who died at the scene after suffering serious injuries.

A bomb-disposal team was sent to Bismarck Street in the Charlottenburg neighborhood to search for more possible explosives within the damaged Volkswagen Passat.

Police have urged residents in the area to stay away from their windows as the bomb squad examines the car.
