Mexican President Begins Tour of Central America in Guatemala

On the tour, the Mexican president will be accompanied by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will leave this Thursday for Guatemala to begin a tour of five Central American countries in which he will discuss issues of development, migration and border security.

Upon his arrival in Guatemala, the Mexican president will go to the National Palace of Culture, where the official welcome ceremony will take place.

Later he will meet behind closed doors with his Guatemalan counterpart, Alejandro Giammattei, which will be extended to the delegations of both nations and a final message to the press is expected.

According to the Mexican ambassador in Guatemala, Romeo Ruiz, López Obrador’s visit reflects the importance that his country gives to relations with the neighboring nation and destination of its exports with Central American countries.

According to the Mexican diplomat, both leaders could discuss common issues on migration, economy and cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive Development Plan and job creation for the region.

Other approaches would include the possibility of opening a new Mexican consulate, rail interconnection, border crossings, and streamlining customs procedures to bring the bilateral relationship up to current and future challenges.

On the tour, the Mexican president will be accompanied by his wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.

On Friday, May 6, López Obrador will leave Guatemala for San Salvador, where he will meet with President Nayib Bukele. After the meeting of the presidents and their entourage there will be a message to the media.

López Obrador will arrive in Belize on May 7, where he will meet with Prime Minister John Briceño. After a meal, the president will leave for Havana, Cuba, where he will arrive on Friday night.

During his stay in Havana, the president of Mexico will place a floral offering at the Monument to José Martí, later he will have a private meeting with Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez.

After a meal between both presidents and their delegations, López Obrador will return to Mexico on the night of Sunday, May 8.
