Devastating floods have hit the Madeira Island/Portugal which has killed 42 people with houses being washed away and cars tossed around like toys.

Portugal are also expected to announce three days of national mourning for the dead which is exptected to be discussed in a crisis cabinet meeting which will be held today.

The search for survivors from remote areas in the island is still taking place amid debris caused by the devastating floods in Portugal.

remote communities in the Portuguese island of Madeira are still trying to be reached by specialist army teams after roads were blocked and bridges collapsed amid the catastrophe.

Due to the large extent of debris and damage to roads and bridges the number of dead is expected to rise as areas in the holiday island are being reached.

Funchal Mayor Miguel Albuquerque said: “It is very probable that we will find more bodies,” AFP news agency reported.

Paramedics from all over Portugal are being sent to the island to help the injured out. Makeshift morgues have also been put out near the airport in the island.
