Orange sing up new sponsorship with UEFA

Orange has strengthened its presence in Eastern European football by securing the sponsorship rights in the telecommunications category for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

The telco, which has become the competition’s eighth global sponsor, will be the official telecommunications partner in 11 European countries while in Poland, Telekomunikacja Polska (TP) will also be an official technology partner of UEFA for Euro 2012. Orange is already a sponsor of the Poland national team and the country’s top flight, the Ekstraklasa.

The 11 territories covered by the sponsorship agreement are Armenia, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Orange will receive perimeter board exposure and will develop and distribute the tournament’s official mobile application.

“We expect Euro 2012 to be a huge success and are excited about the prospect of taking Europe’s elite national team competition to Poland and Ukraine,” said UEFA Events SA chief executive officer David Taylor. “As host broadcaster for Euro 2012 it is crucial we have best-in-class services from Orange and TP, our technology partner, in order to deliver the live match signals from Polish stadia to UEFA’s many broadcaster partners and then on to football fans around the world.”

Taylor added: “The various Orange consumer services to be developed for Euro 2012 will ensure fans across the Orange territories have new ways of enjoying and sharing the passion for Europe’s flagship national team tournament.” Olaf Swantee, executive vice-president of Europe for Orange, said the deal represented “the largest pan-European sponsorship project we have ever done”.

Maciej Witucki, president of TP, added: “We are proud that TP and Orange will be part of the technology solution supporting Euro 2012 at the highest level. Together with UEFA we are going to provide technology solutions which will enable communication and data transfer among official Euro 2012 sites in Poland, including stadia and the International Broadcast Centre.”
