Edinson Cavani comes out of goal drought scoring two against Manchester City as Napoli edges the Manchester side in Champions League carrying its hopes for reaching the next round.

Naples / NationalTurk – Edinson Cavani scored his first goals since Oct. 29 as Napoli beat high flying Manchester City 2-1. Napoli is now second in Group A with eight points with one group round left on Dec. 7 with hopes to continue its Champions League run high.

Star studded Manchester City needs to beat Bayern Munich and have Napoli not win at Villarreal to reach second round at Champions League. Premier League leaders’ chances of qualifying for the knockout phase of the Champions League are thus put big dent by Napoli.

In the battle of two forwards, one in and one out of form, Napoli’s Edinson Cavani were victorious over Citys’s Italian forward Mario Balotelli.

Cavani gave Napoli the lead with a glancing header off a corner in the 17th minute. Manchester City’s mischievous boy Balotelli then took advantage of a defensive error to equalize for City in the 33rd. minute. But Cavani restored Napoli’s lead in the 49th, taking a cross from Andrea Dossena and firing past goalkeeper Joe Hart from the center of the area to have the last word.

Bayern Munich leads Group A with 13 points after beating Villarreal 3-1. Napoli is next with eight, City seven and Villarreal zero.

In the final group round on Dec. 7, City hosts Bayern and Napoli visits Villarreal.
