The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland errupted, just after midnight on Wednesday sending ash nearly eight to ten kilometers into the air which caused major air travel disruptions across Northern Europe.

virtually all airports in Denmark, Norway, and North Sweden were all closed, while flights as far as London, 1000 miles away from the eruption were halted.

The BAA Britain’s airport operator wrote on their official page “Major disruption expected – Following advice from the Met Office, the national air traffic service (NATS) has introduced restrictions to UK airspace this morning as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the UK from Iceland.”

“These measures currently affect Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, which are closed. Passengers are instructed NOT to travel to these airports. All arriving and departing flights are currently suspended. (A decision will be taken later today at Aberdeen regarding the first wave of flights due to operate tomorrow morning (Friday 16th April)).”

The delayed flights caused chaos in the airports leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded.

Around 800 people around the Eyjafjallajokull volcano which is nearby Fimmvorduhals volcano that erupted last month were evacuated as the heat caused by the volcano caused major flooding in the near by areas cutting roads and risked collapsing a bridge.

Experts are saying though the ashes were not visible to the naked eye, could cause engines to fail and also restricted visibility.

However Iceland’s major airports had remained open as the ashes were blown away from the country.

Icelandic public broadcaster RUV reported that a 500m fissure had appeared at the top of the crater on Wednesday.
