US embassy in Oslo evacuated after bomb alarm

The US embassy in Oslo, Norway has been evacuated after security staff found a suspicious object beneath under a car, Norwegian officials say.

The US embassy and the surrounding area, including the royal palace, were cleared of people in the heart of Norway’s capital, and that a bomb squad with sniffer dogs have been called to the scene.

Martin Todnem, police spokesperson has said that around 500 metres surrounding the embassy has been cleared, after security guards made a call just short after 11am this morning.

The NTB news agency reported that visitors to the royal place, the residence of the nation’s monarch, were also cleared, but that its staff members remained there. The royal family was not in the palace at the time of dangerous.

One of the Norway’s newspapers is reporting that a bomb squad is on site along with other emergency services. The Royal Palace has also been evacuated, while there are conflicting reports that the Foreign Ministry was also cleared.

Norway recently remembered the victims of the July 22 last year attacks where Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik went on a violent rampage killing a total of 77 people at the Utoya Island.

Anders Breivik, a right-ring extremist who ranted against multiculturalism, bombed a government district in Oslo that killed 8 people before going on a shooting rampage that killed 69 at a youth camp sponsored by the left-wing Labor Party. His trial is ongoing and Anders Breivik has confessed to the massacre.
