Ekrem Sahin Denmark close case
The young Turk suffered from fatal beating by prison guards in Denmark and died eventually

Ekrem Sahin, a 23-year-old Turkish national who was serving a two-year sentence in a Denmark prison had passed away after guards had beaten him into a coma last January.

Now Ekrem Sahin’s family in Denmark have to suffer a second shock since Denmark police authorities decided to close the case after investigations indicated there were no criminal neglect or an element of crime of which the guardians can be accused of.

A few days following the beating by prison guards Ekrem Sahin’s heart stopped and only began beating again due to the efforts by doctors that arrived to the prison by ambulance.

Admitted immediately to intensive care at the Odense University Hospital, doctors had little hope for Sahin’s recovery. Expressing that they did not know how long his heart had stopped for, doctors stated that even if he lived he would be permanently handicapped.

As his mother Nermin Kalkan and father Ömer Sahin along with all of their close family friends waited to hear of any developments, they received the bad news at five in the morning. Both Sahin’s mother and father had a nervous breakdown.

The Danish polish classified the event, which resulted in Ekrem Sahin going into a coma, as ‘an ordinary, everyday event.’ They only decided to take action once the news began to hit the Turkish press and the Turkish Ambassador became involved. The involved guards weren’t questioned after the event transpired, Danish police had waited weeks to take action and initiated a widespread investigation into the incident in order to prevent it from escalating.

The mourning family Sahin said they would be following up on the investigation, and Turkish-origin Social Democrat Party deputy Hüseyin Arac also promised to provide the Ministry of Justice with a parliamentary query. Deputy Arac stated that he would be closely following the event and would try to uncover what actually had transpired.

The attorney of Family Sahin, Björn Elmquist declared to turkish press, that he was informed of the case’s closure last friday, while he and the parent of Ekrem Sahin were waiting for the autopsy report to arrive from Turket. The attorney added that it’s wrong and illegal to close the case, while it was on progress. The family of Ekrem Sahin plan to appeal to attorney general’s office in Denmark, claiming that Denmark administration tries to cover the case up before it attracts more and more public attention.
