Man jailed for 3 years after 30 stolen World Cup tickets were found

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to three years in prison after South African police found 30 stolen World Cup tickets on the man.

World cup fansThe Nigerian man named as Kunle Benjamin was sentenced to three years in prison by the special World cup courts in South Africa. Over 50 courts were set up to deal with crimes at the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Nigeria man who was stopped by South African police after suspicious behavior while in his car prompted officers to search the man and the car where they found 30 World Cup tickets.

police spokeswoman Sally de Beer said “As the suspect was acting suspiciously police decided to search him and the 30 tickets were discovered,”

“This is yet again an example of the effectiveness of having dedicated teams… to deal with World Cup-related offences,”

According to police officials, the Nigerian man was unable to explain how and where he obtained the 30 tickets.

FIFA have also investigated the matter and identified that the tickets were purchased online but were unable to find the addresses.

FIFA have warned World Cup fans to purchase tickets from the official FIFA.com site or from official travel agents or tour operators on the FIFA Tour Operator Program.

FIFA introduced the new procedures to limit the number of fake tickets and sports fans not being able to enter the stadiums due to ineligible tickets.

FIFA have said that the only secure way of obtaining official tickets is by purchasing from the official FIFA.com website or by official tour operators or travel agents on the FIFA Tour Operator Program.
