Forced marriage to be outlawed : parents face will be jail under new laws. Theresa May will announce plans to make forced marriage a criminal offence in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Home Secretary will promise a sweeping crackdown after warnings that up to eight thousand young women a year are pushed into wedlock without their agreement. The new law about forced marriage

A British Conservative Politician Theresa May is expected to declare around 500 thousand pound to support schools and other agencies spot early signs of a forced marriage. But some campaigners warn that criminalising forced marriage in England altogether could deter victims from coming forward.

For a criminal conviction, the authorities must currently try to show and prove that those responsible have broken other laws, such as kidnapping, false imprisonment, harassment or assault. Breaching a prevention order is also punishable by up to 2 years in jail, but for contempt of court. And a government advertising campaign will highlight an individual person’s right to choose who they want to marry.

British government says : no more forced marriage for our children

A such law was introduced last year in Scotland giving courts there the power to issue protect orders to those at risk, which if breached could carry a 2 year prison sentence.

Since 2008, courts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been able to issue civil orders, under the Forced Marriage Act, to prevent forced marriage or protect victims – especially young girls.

Prime Minister James Cameron has told as the plans were announced that he had listened to these concerns and there would be a “comprehensive package to identify possible victims, support those who have suffered first hand and, indeed, prevent criminality wherever possible”. To the end of discuss he added : “We have spent time with those who work tirelessly to raise and address this issue and I want to send a clear and strong message : forced marriage is wrong, is illegal and will not be tolerated.”
