Indian PM for re-energizing ties with US

PM Modi was of the view that re-energizing the partnership between India and the US would send an important message to the region and beyond. “The relationship between the world`s oldest and largest democracies should not only be for the benefit of the two countries, but should emerge as a powerful force of good for peace, stability and prosperity in the world,” he said.

Indian official spokesman said Burns conveyed US President’s s desire to strengthen economic relations, including in next-generation technologies and manufacturing sector; cooperate in enhancing energy security; deepen security cooperation, including in maritime security, counter-terrorism and intelligence exchange; expand consultation and coordination on Afghanistan; and, work more broadly for security and prosperity in Asia.

After Narendra Modi’s  rightwing Hindu party BJP won general elections in India in May this year, US president called on Modi to congratulate him on becoming prime minister of world’s largest democracy.

US administration has denied visa to Modi from 2002 for anti-Muslim riots in his home state of Gujarat. Over 1000 Muslims were killed by Hindu rioters in Gujarat in 2002 when Modi was chief minister of the State.
