Cameroonian State Media has said that the army has killed 27 members of Nigeria’s militant group, Boko Haram near a northern town with Nigeria.

Earlier this week, Boko Haram drove some 500 Nigerian soldiers to Cameroon after the soldiers lost control of the town of Gamboru Ngala in the northeast of Nigeria in a fierce fighting with the militants.

Boko Haram has captured dozen of towns in northeastern Nigeria and has declared a new Islamic Caliphate with its headquarters in the town of Gwoza in Borno State.

The Nigerian Defence Ministry has said that the military is preparing for a counter-attack to push Boko Haram militants out of Gwoza and Gamboru Ngala it has taken control but that is yet to happen.

Cameroon’s State Radio and Television, CRTV said Boko Haram fighters had crossed the border into Cameroon earlier this week after successfully overpowering the Nigerian army but was met with a strong resistance from the Cameroonian army resulting in heavy casualties against the militants.

“Cameroon soldiers have killed 27 Boko Haram elements during an attack in a locality near Fotokol in the far north of the country close to the Nigerian border”, CRTV reported.

The clashes were said to have began on Monday and Tuesday. There was however no word on any casualties from the Cameroonian soldiers.

The Cameroonian military high command also said the militants have been pushed out of Cameroon’s territory back to Nigeria.

Local reports in Cameroon add that Cameroon’s borders have been part of northeastern Nigeria that has seen intense fighting over the past two weeks.

Last month, the Cameroonian government together with Chad agreed to set a multi-national force to help Nigeria fight Boko Haram. Boko Haram has since then staged many attacks in Cameroon.

Boko Haram five-year insurgency has intensified in recent months despite the deployment of thousands of extra troops to the worst-affected areas in the northeast by the Nigerian government.

Social Commentators in Nigeria say Boko Haram has made significant gains against the government by encroaching on the territorial integrity of the country.

Boko Haram insurgency since 2009 has killed thousands of people and rendered dozen others homeless across northeastern Nigeria.

It has stepped up its attacks ever since it abducted the Chibok schoolgirls in April which sparked an international outrage.

An international rescue operation is still being carried out by the US and its allies to be able to locate and free the abducted schoolgirls.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre and the Norwegian Refugee Council has said that more than 3,300 people have been killed by Boko Haram this year alone. Political analysts say this is the worse year for Nigeria since Boko Haram began its campaign in 2009.
