In the USA, cold-brewed coffee has long been known as “cold brew”, and it is also available in some cafés in Germany. The special thing about this type of preparation is that the coffee has to steep for up to 24 hours. As a result, it contains less acid and bitter substances, tastes milder and fruitier. As the name suggests, cold water is poured over coarsely ground coffee powder.

There are different opinions as to whether the cold-brewed drink contains more caffeine than the hot one. According to nutrition expert Sabine Hülsmann from the Bavarian consumer advice center, however, the “cold brew” contains just as much caffeine as the conventionally prepared version.

Recipe: Preparation of Cold Brew

The following recipe for “Cold Brew” has already proven itself in the t-online editorial team. You already have everything you need for the cold coffee at home: a large container, for example a carafe, spoon, coffee filter and filter attachment, cling film, empty water bottle to keep in the fridge.

How To Make “Cold Brew” / Ingredients and proportions:

1 liter of cold water

200 grams of coarsely ground coffee, preferably filter coffee roast

How To Make “Cold Brew” / Preparation:

Put the ground coffee in the carafe, fill with cold water and stir well.

Now cover the opening of the jar with cling film and let the mixture stand at room temperature for about 12 hours.

The coffee must then be filtered. As with normal coffee, this works best with a filter attachment on a coffee pot and standard paper filters.

Transferred to a sealable bottle, the “cold brew” will keep in the fridge for up to four weeks, but it certainly won’t last that long because it simply tastes too delicious.

The cold coffee can be drunk pure with ice cubes, milk, cream or unusual ingredients such as fruit sorbet or tonic.
