US Air Force has cancelled the purchase of over 3000 iPads for its pilots due to security concerns.

Washington / NationalTurk – US Air Force has cancelled the purchase of nearly 3000 iPads for its pilots amid security concerns.

Us Air Forces executives searched out that the iPad’s popular document-viewing application was developed by a Russian programmer. Result : Plans to purchase nearly 3000 iPads were immediately scrapped by USAF.

The Russian software computer program, which has apparently undermined plans for the modernization of US armed forces, was developed by Yury Selyukov.

But some US military officials suspect the app poses a threat to national security. So they have chosen not to use Russian software in the Us army for fear that sensitive data might be compromised.

The document viewer merely helps to view and edit the most needed and popular text files and graphic formats such as PDF, TXT, DOC or XLS. They can be used when creating electronic instructions and flying charts to replace paper documentation. The GoodReader application, as it is named, is one of the most popular in the AppStore.

iPad Application could be comprimised if used by USAF pilots

But USAF ‘s concerns originate from one feature of the application. The application allows users to encrypt coding within the iPad. So if anyone has access to information such as flight data especially for pilots or maps or anything that is needed to be secure or secured, it can always be used. And this is one of the main reasons why the US Air Force wanted this application to get installed on the iPads they would purchase for its pilots.

Civil aviation did not see anything suspicious in the iPad application and the software is currently being used in the electronic flight bags of Alaska Airlines pilots, while Delta Airlines is expected to use the program when it goes paperless later in 2012.

GoodReader for iPads : Not Approved by USAF officers

However, some experts state that the alleged threat to security is probably not the only reason why Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has scrapped plans to purchase iPads. One expert has suggested there could simply be not enough information about the application on the actual GoodReader’s web site. Another reason, experts point out, could be that there could be a monopoly. There is such a huge market for this iPad app and it is quite possible that they do not want one person to take over the entire industry.

In February Air Mobility Command asked for bids for as many as 18,000 of the Apple computers or an equivalent model. If AFSOC’s cancellation will have any effect on the decision from the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command, remains still to be seen.
