Apple announces the end of production of the iPod

The iPod once made Apple a lot of money. However, the music player was supplanted by the boom of the iPhone. Now the company announces the end of iPod production.

The US technology group Apple has announced the end of iPod production. The MP3 player “not only influenced the music industry, but also redefined the way music is discovered, heard and shared,” said Marketing Vice President Greg Joswiak on Tuesday.

The iPod Touch will remain available in the brand’s retail outlets while stocks last. In the meantime, however, the “music experience” of the iPod has been integrated into “all” Apple products.

Almost 450 million iPods sold in 20 years

The rectangular, white iPod hit store shelves in 2001 and quickly gained popularity. The MP3 player and the associated music software iTunes helped legal music downloads to break through and thus heralded the end of CDs.

According to media reports, Apple has sold almost 450 million of the devices in the past 20 years.
