Cuban legislators discuss deficiencies in important sectors

The results of the efforts to control and supervise deficiencies in the national economy, and the effects of the ongoing updating are the focus of discussions today at the Cuban Parliament”s committee sessions.

In the first case, legislators are examining problems with the 2013-2014 sugarcane harvest, which though improved over the year, only achieved 5.3 percent of the 17.5 percent planned increase, due to low industrial performance and organizational shortages.

Another relevant issue is the review of capacities available for processing fruits and vegetables for the food industry.

The parliamentary group of industries, construction and energy is analyzing the results in energy savings, and the use of renewable sources of energy.

The agenda includes issues related to the work of the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba, care for people living in the mountainous rural zones, investment processes in many sectors, tourism service quality, telecommunications development, and functioning of non-agricultural cooperatives.

One new experience to be analyzed is the creation of Biocubafarma and its impact in terms of scientific results, preservation of human capital, and increased income through exports.

First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel spoke yesterday about the great challenge of the country’s educational system in training revolutionary, patriotic, humane, disciplined, decent, hardworking, active, and thinking citizens whose sense of solidarity is second nature.

This implies a rescue and renewal of Cuban schools, noted Diaz-Canel after speaking at the parliament’s Education, Culture, Science, Technology and Environment Committee, “because we must adapt to new social, historic and economic conditions.”

Within the marked context for the updating of the country’s socio-economic model and approval of a new Foreign Investment Law, Cuban legislators agreed that for the Ministry for Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, 2014 is a year of intensive work due to responsibilities of that body in such affairs.
