The Colorado cinema shooting suspect, James Holmes, sent a notebook detailing his chilling plans for the Batman massacre in Denver to a psychiatrist at his university eight days before carrying it out.

Mass-shooting suspect James Holmes mailed a notebook before Friday’s early-morning theater massacre in Colorado to the University of Colorado’s medical campus, where he had been a doctoral neuroscience student.

The Colorado gunman suspected of one of the worst shooting rampages in recent United States history is a neuroscience graduate who dropped out of his PhD course last month.

As Colorado reeled from its latest mass killing, details were starting to emerge about 24-year-old James Holmes, who was in police custody after shooting at least 12 people dead and injuring 58 others at a screening of latest Batman movie premiere, The Dark Knight Rises.

The relationship between Holmes and the psychiatrist is not fully understood at this time. It was also not clear if James Holmes, who was a doctoral neuroscience student, had previous contact with the psychiatry professor. The package may have arrived as early as July 12.

Police recovered the package on Monday this week after getting a search warrant for the medical center mail room and then getting a second warrant to actually open the package. Police found the package as Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes described it, including his name in the return address, and it’s now being analyzed. It is unclear how long the package had been in the mail room before its discovery.

When FBI agents opened the book they found its contents included drawings James Holmes had made of gun-toting stick-like figures shooting each other. According to one law enforcement official, the book was full of details about how James Holmes was going to kill people.

While detectives have yet to establish a motive for the crime it also emerged that Holmes bought an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle only hours after failing an oral exam, which was a key part of his PhD some three weeks ago. James Holmes had previously been a high performing student, but 3 days later, he dropped out of the university entirely. Some experts said academic failure could have affected Holmes’ state of mind.

New details also emerged of James Holmes’ behaviour during the shooting with witnesses describing how he ordered some victims to stand up before shooting them at close range.

In the months before the attack, Colorado mass killer James Holmes was believed to have met several prostitutes. James Holmes wrote accounts of some of the encounters on an adult website.

The weapons and 6 thousand rounds of ammunition James Holmes assembled were believed to have cost 15,000 dollars. Colorado shooting suspected James Holmes was believed to have bought them with money from a prestigious US government education grant which gave him a $26 thousand annual living allowance.
