Costa Allegra fire marks the end for Costa Crociere SpA

Costa Crociere SpA, Costa Cruises is the largest cruise brand in Europe, is facing now a legal and public relations nightmare after seeing two high-profile disasters on its luxury cruise vessels only six weeks apart eachother

The Jan. 13 wreck of its Costa Concordia ocean liner off a Tuscan island had killed up to 32 passengers and crew and it was a top news for weeks reporting the captain of Concardia was accussed of negligent homicide. Since the inicident of Costa Concordia Costa Crociere bookings already had dipped by an estimated one-third. The Italian company blames that shipwreck on its captain, who stands accused of abandoning ship as passengers struggled to escape.

Now, following an engine room fire this week that left its Costa Allegra cruise ship drifting without power in the Indian Ocean, Costa Cruises faces an even more difficult future, which will possibly be the death sentence for the already – fading cruising company.

The Seychelles Red Cross set up several tents to assist any passengers needing help and the British High Commission and the French, Canadian and Italian embassies were at the Seychelles port to assist their citizens, while tour operators and travel agents flocked to the port, waiting to help passengers ashore. They lined up dozens of buses ready to take Costa Allegra passengers to either the airport or a Seychelles resort, in a process which was expected to take several hours.

Costa Allegra ‘s fate was better than Costa Concordia

The Costa Allegra has been at sea with more than 1,000 people onboard and without electricity since a fire in the generator room on Monday. Toilets, showers, lights or air conditioning all misfunctioned.  The huge cruise vessel went adrift in tropical heat in the rough waters of Indian Ocean. The passengers pulled out beds to the deck in order to escape the extreme heat in Costa Allegra. A French fishing vessel towed the adrift cruise ship Costa Allegra to the Seychelles, which became a haven for more than 1000 people, passengers and crew alike. The average age of passengers is reported to be 55 years. No one was injured in the fire on Monday and the ensuing chaos in the 3 days Costa Allegra drifted in the Indian Ocean.

The Allegra, whose Italian name means merry or happy, left northern Madagascar, off Africa’s south-east coast, on Saturday and was headed toward Port Victoria in the Seychelles. The cruise liner was carrying 413 crew members and 627 passengers, including 212 Italians, 31 Britons, eight Americans and 15 Canadians.
