Cumbria policeThe gunman, alleged to be 52-year-old Derrick Bird, had shot randomly at people in 11 separate locations, and was seen fleeing into wooded area in Boot, Eskdale.

According to the Cumbrian police, the body of a man was found along with a pistol in what is alleged to be suicide.

A spokesman for the Cumbrian police said “Police have seized a gun from the scene and are now working to formally confirm the identity of the deceased and the number of people injured or dead.”

A neighbor of Mr Bird told reporters that he was a quiet man and never spoke to them despite the fact that he had lived in there for several years. The neighbor also added that Mr Bird “himself to himself”.

According to initial reports, the incidents started at a taxi rank on Duke Street, Whitehaven and the alarm was raised at approximately 10:30am after the police were called to a firearms incident.

“I don’t know what caused it, but something must have happened last night. Derrick Bird took off in his car and went home. I don’t know what time of night it was.”

A witness also described commotion as the news broke out and of dozens of police vehicles rushing to the crime scenes. Then a car pulled up on the left, stopping at the lights.”

“I saw a man with a large shotgun and his windscreen was smashed. I drove through the red light to get into Lowther Street and get out of the way. I got home safely but was very shaken.”
