David Cameron: I must save Britain from Brown

David Cameron: I must save Britain from BrownDavid Cameron issued a final rallying call to the nation yesterday, declaring there were just “24 hours left to save Britain”.

He believes that he can still snatch victory as the election nears a nail-biting fight to the finish. And he is determined to mop up every last vote before polling stations close at 10pm tonight.

David Cameron has everything to play for with as many as 40% of voters still undecided despite weeks of campaigning and three live television debates. All three main party leaders made passionate pleas to voters yesterday, but bookies said the result was too close to call. Some polls suggest Cameron could nail a majority by a whisker as the Lib Dems slip back to third behind struggling Labour.

But other indicators point firmly to Britain waking up to a hung parliament tomorrow. That result could spark frantic negotiations, possibly dragging on for days, as the parties haggle to form a government.

A poor result for Labour would kill off Gordon Brown’s hopes of clinging to power. And if Cameron wins most seats but no majority, it could mean an unexpected Tory-Lib Dem alliance.

Cameron repeated his campaign message last night that only a decisive Tory win would secure Britain’s recovery. He warned that any other result could leave the UK in a similar position to debt-hit Greece. David Cameron shunned sleep on Tuesday night as he campaigned in must-win marginal seats.

His battlebus took him to Scotland before he tucked into fish and chips in Cumbria and visited firefighters in Carlisle.

The Tory leader called the final few hours of the campaign “nerve-racking” but he added: “I think we’re winning the big arguments.”
