Madonna Visit to Malawi: Malawian officials accuse US pop star Madonna of lying against the state / Africa News

Madonna

Malawi has accused US singer Madonna of not being honest and sincere in telling the truth about what she is doing in the country.

The singer is believed to be engaging in some charity works in the country in the educational sector.

Madonna is believed to have also adopted two Malawian children and the singer toured the country last week in what she described as wanting to help the country end extreme poverty.

The statement from the presidency also accused the singer of bullying state officials in addition to the lies.

Madonna reportedly complained about how she was treated on her visit to the country last week at the airport and many analysts believe is the reason that has triggered these harsh words from the presidency.

The government accused Madonna of exaggerating her charity contribution and said she should concentrate on playing music and not engaging in lies.

“For her to tell the whole world that she is building schools in Malawi when she has actually only contributed to the construction of only classrooms is not compatible with manners of someone who thinks she deserves to be revered with state grandeur”, the statement from the presidency said.

“Granted, Madonna is a famed international musician. But that does not impose an injunction of obligation on any government under whose territory Madonna finds herself, including Malawi, to give her state treatment. Such treatment, even if she deserved it, is discretionary not obligatory,’ ‘the further added statement.

The statement further added that among the many things that Madonna needs to learn as a matter of urgency is the decency of telling the truth to the whole world.

The Daily Telegraph in the UK reported that Madonna and her delegation were stripped of their VIP status on their way out of the country and this was thought to have angered the pop star compelling her to complain about how she was treated.

They had to line up with other passengers at the airport and were frisked by security officials, the report said.

But many analysts say the change in her at the airport status could be the result of public criticisms about her charitable work in the country.

Madonna was reportedly to have said that she is building schools in the country and to help end extreme poverty in the country in media interview.

But Malawi’s education minister Eunice Kazembe told the BBC African Service that Madonna was only contributing to building of classrooms not entire schools as she claimed in the media.

Madonna has so far not reacted to the statement from the presidency as to whether what the presidency said is true or not.
