National Socialism Underground : New Nazi Threat in Germany

Germany is witnessing a new form of far-right terrorism called National Socialist Underground. German investigators have linked a series of 10 murders to the newest neo-Nazi terrorist cell.

Berlin / NationalTurk – German interior minister has confirmed Germany is witnessing a new form of far-right terrorism following the discovery of a group suspected of killing 10 people, including eight of Turkish origin who were mostly kebab stall owners. All had run small businesses or fast-food stands, in cities across Germany, leading to the killings being dubbed the ‘doner murders.’ The nine civilian victims were businessmen, including a flower wholesaler, a tailor and a kebab stall owner, who were shot at their workplaces.

Hans-Peter Friedrich told memebers of the media in Berlin that investigators must now focus on determining whether the group was isolated or part of a wider network. He stated the killings represented a new form of terrorism because the group did not publicly claim responsibility or boast its actions within the far-right scene. Germany’s Interior Minister has warned of a ‘new form of far-right terrorism’ as details emerged of a grotesque film left by members of a neo-Nazi cell in eastern Germany, in which they claimed the murder of nine immigrants between 2000 and 2006.Shortly after the discovery investigators searched a burnt-out house in Zwickau, used by the men and one woman, ‘Beate Z,’ who later handed herself in to German police. There they found guns used in the murder of the policewoman and of the nine vendors, eight of whom were of Turkish background and the other a Greek.

The right-wing terrorist organization, which calls itself the ‘National Socialist Underground’ is suspected of having murdered eight people of Turkish origin and one Greek person in several German cities between September 2000 and April 2006, as well as killing a police officer in the southwestern city of Heilbronn in April 2007. German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said all unsolved crimes with a suspected far-right connection dating back to 1998 would be re-examined for connections to the group, originating in Jena, in the eastern state of Thuringia.

The social and political reactions came shortly after the discovery of the dreadful Nazi organization. The Central Council of Jews in Germany called for the closure of the country’s far-right National Democratic Party (NPD) yesterday on their website Handelsblatt Online. Dieter Graumann, head of the council, said if it were made certain the Turks were killed by the far-right group, urgent actions against far-right extremism should be taken, which include closing the NPD.

The revelations, which have caused shock and outrage across Germany, began after police found the bodies of two men, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boehnhardt, both with far-right links, in a mobile home in Eisenach last week. Police believe they killed themselves after a botched bank robbery.

Federal prosecutors said a fourth member suspected of belonging to the terrorist organization was arrested earlier yesterday. The 37-year-old German suspect, identified only as Holger G. in line with German privacy laws, is believed to have helped the group’s other three known members by providing them with documents and vehicles, one of which was apparently used in the killing of a police officer, prosecutors said. Two of the other group members, identified only as Uwe B. and Uwe M., are dead while the third, identified as Beate Z., turned herself into the police.’Beate Z’ faces charges of murder, attempted murder, arson and belonging to a terrorist organisation.

The suspected neo-Nazi case made headlines across the German press Saturday. ‘For the first time since reunification Germany faces large-scale far-right extremism,’ said Berlin’s Tagesspiegel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the murders were shameful for Germany. We must assume that this is right-wing extremism in the worst form, and it is shaming that such a thing can happen in our country she told German television.

Police also found a 15-minute film recorded on DVDs ready to be sent to Islamic cultural organisations and the media. The German magazine Spiegel printed stills from the film showing the murder victims’ bodies and grotesque montages made by the group showing the cartoon figure of the Pink Panther to point out the scenes of the killings.

‘ Germany Tour  – Nine Turks shot ‘ said a placard in one cartoon scene.

Protesters, many with Turkish roots, gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin Sunday to protest against neo-Nazis. Opposition politicians expressed anger that the cell went undetected for so long. The lack of deeds of the Nazi terrorist cell have committed after 2006 has created doubts on the potency of German police, many believe there are more murders of the Neo-Nazi Terror cell, which the police haven’t identified yet.

Bir Yorum

  1. “[F]ew Indians arirved here with the green-card; the programme was adopted mostly by specialists from Eastern Europe, citizens of Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Poland, and even Russia, while the Indians stopped at Frankfurt in transit across the Atlantic.”- What a marvelously crafted sentence! The trajectory of the sentence sweeps through a 10-year history of the immigration program, and makes a clever sociological observation about the choice of Indians when it comes to migration. That the sentence occurs roughly mid-way in the essay is no accident (but the evidence of the author’s control over his craft) – it resonates the thought of the uncle mentioned at the beginning and paves the way for the observations on immigration at the end. My compliments!
