Ramon Castro, Cuban leader’s older brother, dies at age 91

Ramon Castro DiedRamon Castro, older brother of Cuban leaders Fidel and Raul Castro, died in Havana at age 91.

Born in the rural town of Biran, Ramon Castro participated in the rebellion that led to the Cuban Revolution, but did not follow his brothers into the political arena.

Fidel Castro, now 89, ruled for decades before poor health caused him to turn over power to 84-year-old brother Raul in 2006. The arrangement was formalized when Raul became president two years later.

According to Voice of America, Ramon Castro, who studied agricultural engineering, spent his life tending crops and livestock. He oversaw Cuba’s sugar production in the 1960s to help increase output, and he founded several state companies handling production and transport of food crops. He also participated in agricultural research.

Ramon was said to resemble his famous younger brother Fidel, but Ramon was known to joke that, because he was the older brother, it was Fidel who resembled Ramon.
