The UN is increasing pressure on Syria, where mortal fighting between Assad government forces and protesters has been raging for almost six months now.

Reports from international sources state that Syria has been in a state of unrest since anti-government protests broke out in the southern province of Daraa and spread to other cities in mid-March. They also added that Syria has banned foreign media and severely restricted local coverage, making it nearly impossible to confirm events on the ground.

The Human Rights Council has ordered an investigation into alleged violations. The UN says that more than 2,000 protesters have been killed during the uprising.

“We have seen the American sanctions followed by the European sanctions, and now they are using the International Human Rights Council to find violations,” a political analyst expert of Middle East informed. He alleged that the UN will use this investigation to put more pressure on Syria, as the situation there has been very difficult because of the international interference by Western powers and by some Arab regimes too. Speaking of the reforms proposed by the Syrian president, he said that “it doesn’t matter what President Assad does in the coming days or months, if he does not control the security in his country, these escalations will continue because somebody is pushing the people from the outside, and telling them ‘Do as much damage as you can.’ It is the West [America, etc.] that is actually helping to destabilize Syria.”

State-run Syrian news agency SANA reported on Tuesday that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad issued the law of the local administration, providing for the decentralization of authority and concentrating power and responsibilities in the hands of the public. Local Administration law was the second aimed at reform issued in 24 hours. It follows a decree issued this week providing for the formation of a multi-party committee that will be entrusted with the authority in Syria to give the final say on applications to form parties or amend their internal systems.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay accused Syrian soldiers and security forces of using excessive force, including tanks and heavy artillery, to crush peaceful protests. In turn, Bashar al-Assad’s government has blamed armed groups for the violence and has stated more than 500 soldiers and police have been killed since the unrest erupted in March.

Earlier on Sunday and at an interview on Syrian TV, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned of hidden Syrian military capabilities and challenged “We are capable of dealing with it … I am not worried.”
