Local elections in Turkey: 61.4 million voters

For the 31 March Local Government General Elections, voters in 32 provinces went to the polls at 07.00 Turkish time, and voting started at 08.00 in other provinces.

Turkey is going to the polls to elect local administrators who will serve for 5 years.

According to the decision of the Supreme Election Board (YSK), Adıyaman, Ağrı, Artvin, Bingöl, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Erzincan, Erzurum, Gaziantep, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Hakkari, Kars, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, Mardin, Muş, Ordu, Rize, Siirt. Voting has started in Sivas, Trabzon, Tunceli, Şanlıurfa, Van, Bayburt, Batman, Şırnak, Ardahan, Iğdır and Kilis and in penal institutions in these provinces.

Voting in these provinces will be completed at 16.00. Voting hours in other provinces will be 08.00-17.00.

In the election where there are 61 million 441 thousand 882 registered voters, 1 million 32 thousand 610 young people will vote for the first time. In the elections in which candidates of 34 political parties will compete, 206 thousand 845 ballot boxes were established throughout the country and approximately one thousand mobile ballot boxes were created.

In the elections in which mayors of 81 provinces, 973 districts and 390 towns and 50 thousand 336 headmen will be determined, elections for provincial council membership and municipal council membership will also be held.

34 political parties are participating in the elections. The order of the parties on the ballot paper is as follows:

A voter can only vote for the elections held in that electoral district.

Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir, Bursa, Denizli, Diyarbakır, Erzurum, Eskişehir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Istanbul, İzmir, Kahramanmaraş, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Konya, Malatya, Manisa, Mardin, Mersin, Muğla, Ordu, Sakarya, Voters in Samsun, Şanlıurfa, Tekirdağ, Trabzon and Van will vote for “metropolitan mayor”, “mayor”, “municipal council member” and “headman and alderman”.

In non-metropolitan provinces, votes will be given for “provincial council membership”, “mayor”, “municipal council membership” and “headman and alderman”. In the villages, votes will be cast for “provincial council membership” and “headman and elder council”.

The ballot paper for metropolitan mayorship will be “white”, the ballot paper for provincial council membership will be “orange”, the ballot paper for mayoralty will be “blue” and the ballot paper for municipal council membership will be “yellow”. Ballot papers will be placed in a single envelope.

Mobile ballot boxes were created in this election for voters who are bedridden due to illness or disability. These voters will be able to cast their votes in mobile ballot boxes.
